How it works
What it is and how it works
The science
Each option supplies a different nutrient or cofactor studied in metabolism. Vitamin B12 is a cofactor for red blood cell formation, nerve function, and DNA synthesis. MIC combines methionine, inositol, and choline, lipotropic compounds that participate in how the liver processes and exports fat. Lipo-C pairs lipotropic ingredients with B vitamins. L-carnitine helps shuttle fatty acids into mitochondria for energy production. Glutathione is a sulfur-containing antioxidant the body makes. Oral methylene blue is studied for its effects on mitochondrial electron transport at low doses, and it also inhibits the enzyme MAO-A, which is the basis of its serotonin-syndrome interaction warning and the reason it requires careful medication screening. A provider chooses which, if any, fits your goals. These are studied mechanisms, not outcome claims, and individual results vary.
Taking it
Injection or oral
Your provider specifies which option, the format, dose, and schedule. Injectables are given subcutaneously or intramuscularly with sterile technique and site rotation; oral options are taken as labeled. Methylene blue, when prescribed, is taken orally at a low dose and can turn urine or stool blue-green, which is expected. Do not combine methylene blue with antidepressants or other serotonergic medications unless your provider has cleared it. Do not exceed your prescribed dose. Refills follow a 12-week cadence with provider check-ins.
Common side effects
Most side effects are mild and tend to ease as your body adjusts. This isn’t a complete list. Your provider reviews the full picture with you and what to watch for.
- Injection-site pain, redness, swelling, or bruising
- Nausea, mild stomach upset, or diarrhea
- Headache, flushing, or light-headedness
- Body or urine odor with methionine or L-carnitine
- Blue-green urine or stool with methylene blue (expected)
- Temporary metallic or sulfur taste with glutathione
- Rarely, allergic reactions
Important safety information
These metabolic and wellness options are compounded preparations that are not FDA-approved and are not evaluated by the FDA for safety, efficacy, or quality, and they are not appropriate for everyone; they are not weight-loss drugs and we make no efficacy or outcome claims. Common side effects include injection-site reactions, nausea, diarrhea, headache, flushing, and body or urine odor with methionine or L-carnitine. Glutathione may cause a temporary metallic or sulfur taste, and some preparations contain sulfites, so tell your provider about any sulfite allergy. Oral methylene blue inhibits MAO-A and can cause life-threatening serotonin syndrome if combined with serotonergic drugs such as SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, triptans, or tramadol, can cause red-blood-cell breakdown in people with G6PD deficiency, and harmlessly discolors urine and stool blue-green. Rarely, B12 or other injections can cause anaphylaxis. Tell your provider your full medical history, allergies, and every medication and supplement you take before starting, and do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless directed. A licensed provider decides whether any option is clinically appropriate for you, and a consultation does not guarantee a prescription. Stop use and seek emergency care for signs of a serious allergic reaction such as trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or for agitation, fever, rapid heartbeat, or confusion that could signal serotonin syndrome. This is not medical advice.
Metabolic & Wellness Injections is available by prescription only and only where a licensed provider determines it’s clinically appropriate. This information is educational and not a substitute for advice from your provider. Individual results vary. If you experience a serious reaction, seek medical care; for emergencies call 911.
